Lokaal 01, Antwerp, Belgium

I spent a month living and working in the Lokaal 01 project space, close to the centre of Antwerp. As well as an opportunity to get to know the city, I was allowed the freedom to experiment and develop a new body of work, leading up to a solo show in the gallery. The work I produced dealt with the fabric of the building in which I was housed. Previously a garage, the gallery had many architectural peculiarities that acted as catalysts for my own invented structures, from the mechanic's inspection pit, to a bricked up hole in the wall. As a visitor with little knowledge of the city, I used these elements to examine the way knowledge of an unknown place is formed, and how these constructed narratives form temporary structures that act as a haven in times of uncertainty.
