Lokaal 01, Antwerp

Museum Raft: Proposal for intervention at the Koninklijk Art Museum, Antwerp , digital photo collage, 2006

In autumn 2006 I spent a month living and working in the Lokaal 01 project space, close to the centre of Antwerp. As well as an opportunity to get to know the city, I had the freedom to experiment and develop a new body of work, leading up to a solo show in the gallery. The work I produced dealt with the fabric of the building in which I was housed. Previously a mechanic’s workshop, Lokaal was a peculiar place to live and work and had many architectural features that acted as catalysts for my invented structures, from the mechanic's inspection pit, to a bricked up hole in the wall. As a visitor with little knowledge of the city, I used these elements along with materials gathered from the streets to examine the way knowledge of an unknown place is formed, and how these constructed narratives act as a haven in times of uncertainty.
