PAN-PAN, OUTPOST, Norwich

OUTPOST, 10b Wensum Street, Norwich, NR3 1HR

2 – 21 July 2013

With a nautical theme and a sense of impending doom, PAN-PAN features modified postcards commemorating the Falklands War, enamel panels of drawings on the back of vans, flag rubbings made on a warship and some botanical paintings of plants chopped down during road widening works on the A11 into Norwich. My first solo show in the UK brings together seemingly disparate, ephemeral materials from the public space to explore thoughts around progress, individual agency and global crises.

Yes & No, 2013, Rubbing Wax on commercial newsprint paper, 2.2 x 4 m

With help from sailors aboard HMS Duncan, Signal flags 'N' (negative) and 'C' (affirmative) from this new Royal Naval Warship were laid on the flight deck before being covered by the paper roll and rubbed with wax. In an emergency situation, and all electronic and mechanical systems having failed, these flags would be flown together to form the recognised signal of a vessel in distress.
